Welcome to C.E.I.P Espartales! We are a Primary School located at calle Rosalía de Castro, 3 Alcalá de Henares, Madrid 28806.“C.E.I.P Espartales” has been in the bilingual project since inauguration in 2004. The project has grown over the years and there are currently 242 public schools committed to the bilingual project in Madrid Community. We work with children from 3 to 12 years old. The bilingual project, in which you are going to work in, involves children from 1st to 6th year (6 to 12 years old). We have 3 groups of 1st, 4th and 6th year (grade), 4 groups of 2nd , 3rd year and 2 groups of 5rd year. (Depending on the students number every year). The areas taught in English, apart to English as second language, use to be Science, Art and P.Ed.Our timetable is divided in 6 classes of 45 minutes per day, starting at 9 AM and finishing at 2 PM. We have a 30 minute break at 12 o’clock and you are welcomed to stop and have a coffee or snack in the cafeteria while you meet the staff members. On Mondays and Wednesdays teachers stay in and work from 3:30 pm to 6 pm. One of these days a week you will probably stay in too, and help prepare children for the Trinity / Community exams that they will be doing in June. If you want you can stay at school for lunch, we have a prepared menu that starts in the dining room at 3 o’clock. Your main work with us is speaking interaction with our children. That is why it is very important that you try not to speak Spanish to them. You will be preparing classroom materials for regular classes and/ or festivals, holidays, special occasions, etc. in some of your hours at school. We will inform you of the goals that we expect to reach at the end of the week or month. The rest of hours you will be signed into different groups and become part of the class. Twice a month you will have a meeting with the bilingual coordinator to prepare the planning, exchange ideas, express your questions and doubts or simply to have a chat for us to help you as much as we can. Although if you have any problems or questions to make please don’t hesitate in asking at anytime. If you have to go to the doctor or you’re not feeling well to come to school please phone the School at 8:30 or call me at 655061256 so that we can inform to the rest of teachers of your absence. Hope to have a great year working together, Déborah García Cabrejas Bilingual coordinator
FAQ What is my role in the classroom? “Auxiliares” will help English, Science, Art and P.Ed teachers in giving lessons, which can include storytelling, reading out loud, Trinity exams, pronunciation and in general, an English language resource for both children and professors. Assistants may work with only one grade, but some have to work with two or more.. There will also be various celebrations, such as Halloween, Thanksgiving, peace day, carnival, etc and students may do plays, songs, dances or arts & crafts, in which we may ask for support with these activities.
What is the Trinity Exam? The Trinity examination is an assessment exam that allows parents, teachers and La Communidad de Madrid to follow the progress of either the student or to get an overview of the schools English level. The Students are prepared in class for what they will be tested in for Trinity and “auxiliaries” reinforce this preparation with material, extra classes, small groups to selected students, to ensure a successful assessment. Trinity examinations are usually held sometime in the end of May or June.
Do we have to speak English all the time? Yes, it is important that the students see our assistants as English resources. However, while not in the presence of students, we encourage our assistants to practice their Spanish with the other professors.
Do we have to prepare lesson plans? No, auxiliares do not have to prepare lesson plans, but any auxiliar that provides a good idea or has a lesson plan they want to implement can bring it up to with their teacher. We will always appreciate your help.
How does public transportation in Madrid work? Public transportation in Madrid is accessible, efficient and can take you to any part of Madrid with ease. There are many different means of transportation in Madrid. The two most common being the bus and metro. Apart from the bus and metro there is also “cercanías”, commuter trains that take you to the other towns/villages of Madrid (i.e. Alcala de Henares) and the Continental bus systems, which is a commuter bus system. If you plan to live in Madrid there are monthly transportation passes (Abonos mensuales) that give you unlimited access to all modes of transport for given zone. Madrid center is zone A and Alcala de Henares is zone B3, which cost approximately 70€.
